The 550th anniversary of its patron's birth will be celebrated by the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń with the World Copernican Congress.
Although there are minor questions about the actual year and day of Nicolaus Copernicus' birth, it is accepted that it was in the year 1473, on Friday, February 19th, that the man who changed our perception of the universe was born.
On November 16th, 2022, the Senate of the Republic of Poland, in an effort to commemorate the remarkable scientist, established the year 2023 - the Year of Nicolaus Copernicus.
Four institutions tied to the Copernican tradition - the Jagiellonian University in Kraków, the University of Warmia and Mazury in Olsztyn, the Institute of the History of Science of the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń - have prepared several dozen scientific and cultural events for this year organized under a common name - the World Copernican Congress.
The state authorities, as well as the local and church authorities of Kraków, Olsztyn and Toruń, have joined the organization of the Congress. A number of entrepreneurs, media companies and associations, including the Polish Astronomical Society, are also supporting the Congress.
The World Copernican Congress will consist of four multi-thematic scientific events organized in February-September 2023 in the Copernican cities (including two - inaugurating and concluding the Congress - in Toruń), as well as several dozen accompanying events.
Guests of the events will be scientists, people of culture and art, representatives of the authorities. A significant number of invitees will be guests from abroad, including Nobel laureates.
